What’s the difference between PES and DST files?

I’m new to embroidery files, and I keep seeing PES and DST. Can someone explain the differences and when to use each?

PES files are used by Brother machines, while DST is more universal and works with commercial embroidery machines. PES files retain more details like thread colors, so use that if you’re on a Brother machine.
